Exe Clubs unite for Exe Regatta

Although very different in size, boat fleets and cultures, the 5 sailing clubs based along the Exe estuary are united in their passion for sailing culminating in the Exe Regatta every summer. Started as a way of getting the clubs to share resources and race together, the Exe Regatta is now poised to become one of the biggest Regattas in the South West. With many world-class sailors coming from the South West, it’s crucial to provide keenly competitive racing for local sailors to take part in and to keep the youth development programmes going. ‘The Exe is a difficult estuary to sail on with fast moving tides and unpredictable winds making for some challenging sailing.’ commented Lesley Anderson, Hedgerow Marketing, media partners for Exe Regatta.

2019 sees St Peters School, Lympstone and Wilkinson Grant Estate Agents joining the Gold sponsors for the first time, while Tozers Solicitors are Gold sponsors for the 4th year running, along with Exe Sails & Covers. ‘The Exe Regatta raises money for the clubs to invest in sailing training so we need sponsorship and advertisers to fund these training programmes for younger sailors. Because of the large number of members in the five clubs – around 3000 people – sponsors do get good exposure. Anyone can learn to sail and it’s not an expensive sport to get started in since all the clubs offer the use of club boats and provide sailing sessions with safety boat cover. There are always people willing to help beginners!’ commented Vyv Game, Commodore at Starcross Yacht Club.

The Exe Regatta runs over June 8 & 9th 2019 and this year offers races to dinghies, cruisers and multi-hulls including an off-shore race for the multi-hulls. ‘The sailing programme is designed to give an opportunity to get on the water to everyone including younger sailors and those less experienced. Although we do have some fiercely competitive sailors in our midst, we don’t want to exclude others who just want to enjoy the experience.’ said Mike Gall, Commodore at Lympstone Sailing Club. ‘This is a fairly unique opportunity for a wide mix of sailors to come together and enjoy being on the Exe, have some fun competing in their class and of course, come along to the Saturday night BBQ and party.’

‘Each club takes it in turn to host the event which allows each club to stamp its mark on the Regatta – including deciding the sailing programme. This year it is Starcross Yacht Club acting as host with Lympstone Sailing Club hosting the socials and prize giving so we can be sure of a well-run programme and an extremely lively social scene!’ commented James Bowman of the Exe Regatta Committee.

Exe Regatta will be held on June 8 & 9th on the Exe. Gold Sponsors are Tozers Solicitors, Wilkinson Grant, St Peters School and Exe Sails.

The 2019 Regatta entries open on May 1st. There will be an anticipated 100-plus boats taking part involving approx. 200 sailors (helm and crew).

Entries typically come from the Exe clubs but also include entries from across the South West. The Exe Regatta is the ONLY sailing club which brings together the 5 sailing clubs on the Exe.
